Description:

Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to early 5th century CE. A hand-carved wooden weaver comb used for compressing the fibers on a loom rather than feeding the lengthy slay between the warp threads. The tool features a slender handle with a pommel protruding from the end as well as a thick comb body with four slender triangular prongs. Tools like this were quite useful for career weavers as it enabled them to adjust certain areas of the weave rather than adjust all threads in a layer at one time. Size: 7.5" L x 5.7" H (19 cm x 14.5 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired around 2016; ex-private Montrose, California, USA collection
