Eastern Roman Empire, reign of Theodosius II, ca. 402 to 450 CE. Thessalonica Mint. Obverse: D N THEODO - SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, helmeted, cuirassed bust three-quarters front, cross on breast, holding spear over shoulder and shield ornamented with emperor on horseback riding down enemy. Reverse: GLOR ORVI  S TERRAR, Emperor standing facing, holding labarum and globus cruciger; star in field left, TESOB in exergue. Theodosius was scholarly; an easily manipulated man who allowed his government to be run by a succession of relatives and ministers. The emperor did, however, have a hand in founding the University of Constantinople in 425 CE. RIC X, 362; Depeyrot 51/1. Size: 0.75" W (1.9 cm); 4.2 grams
