Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-made, sensual, ceramic votive figure depicting Cupid (Roman version of the Greek Eros) standing with an arm around his mother Venus (Roman version of Aphrodite). Cupid is depicted as a gorgeous youth with large, spread wings; he stands with his hips thrust forward and a hand resting at his waist. Venus is similarly charming, a young, slender woman draped in tight-fitting clothing. Cupid, the god of sexual attraction, and Venus, the goddess of love, desire, and sex, make an obvious pair. Votive figures like this one were made to be kept in personal shrines or given as offerings at a temple - perhaps this one was purchased by someone particularly lovelorn. Size: 1.35" L x 4.45" W x 6.3" H (3.4 cm x 11.3 cm x 16 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
