Description:

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A large transport amphora, with sturdy, curved handles attached to the shoulders, a wide flared rim, and a rounded base. Lacking its cork and pitch stopper, the original contents of this amphora are unknown. Based on the shape, it may have been stewed fruit or salted fish (larger ones were used for wine, and more globular ones for olive oil). Amphorae formed the basis of the Roman economy - storage vessels for transporting goods throughout the Empire, with examples found in North Africa to Britain. The rounded base on this example was intended for storage in soft ground. Roman merchants transported amphorae on ships by placing them in specially-designed racks and roping them through the handles to others. Size: 13" W x 15.25" H (33 cm x 38.7 cm).
