Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. Very unusual pottery sculpture depicting an old man - perhaps a priest - and a semi-nude nymph. Supporting each other as they walk forward, he wears a long himation, his head covered by a tight-fitting cap. She stands with her gown pulled down to her waist left hand at her head, her right arm over the shoulder of her elder companion. Interestingly, there are remains of white and red/orange pigments especially toward the top of the sculpture. Very rare and and interesting subject for which I have seen few comparables. Size: 5.75" H (14.6 cm)

Provenance: private Schroeder collection, Boca Raton, Florida, USA, acquired before 1970
