Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming hollow-molded ceramic votive figure of a rooster, shown here standing proudly upward, with crest and tail erect. To the Romans, the rooster was an agricultural symbol, but was also sometimes seen as a companion of the god Mercury; this votive was probably an offering to him. Provenance: private Virginia, USA collection, acquired 1977; ex-Amsterdam gallery collection
