Description:

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A large mold-made terracotta oil lamp with a stable concave base, rounded side walls, gently sloping shoulders with a repeating curvilinear pattern, a tab-shaped handle, a small vent hole and fill hole, and a large heart-shaped wick spout. The recessed tondo displays two individuals, presumably a man and woman, from the shoulder up and facing one another. A lovely example of early Roman pottery! Size: 4.8" L x 3.5" W x 1.875" H (12.2 cm x 8.9 cm x 4.8 cm).

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
