Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A finely-molded terracotta oil lamp with an incised ring base, sloping walls, rounded shoulders, a pierced loop handle, and a semicircular wick spout with twin tendril-form designs. The center of the vessel displays a deeply-recessed tondo with an encircling concentric ring border, and a petite fill hole inside. An amusing actor's mask composes the primary imagery, with a huge open mouth, almond-shaped eyes, and detailed hair. Roman actors' masks were designed to amplify the actor's voice and also to allow actors to portray many different characters without needing to change their costume. This is a wonderful example due to its striking imagery and vibrant orange-red coloration. Size: 4.5" L (11.4 cm).
