Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A large mold-formed terracotta handle for an even larger oil lamp. The handle is triangular in form with three acutely-angled corners, rounded obverse and reverse sides, and a tab-shaped, and a downward-projecting neck, all covered in red slip. The obverse side portrays a wondrous scene in low relief of a nude male reclining atop a foliate ground beneath the sinuous branches of an overarching tree. A lyre hangs above the figure, and a young lamb stands to the left of the instrument while facing right. A small wire stand presents the handle in a slightly leaning manner. A fine example with beautiful iconography and sophisticated presentation! Custom metal display stand included. Size: 3.25" W x 4.125" H (8.3 cm x 10.5 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
