Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-made, terracotta head of a male youth with a handsome face presenting almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, an aquiline nose, full lips, smooth cheeks, and a rounded chin - all framed by a short, fringed coiffure topped by a cap. He stares steadfastly ahead - conjuring a tranquil, focused demeanor. A wonderful example that demonstrates the Classical sculptors' attainment of naturalism via idealized proportions and adept modeling. While realistic, the piece does not display the Roman tradition of veristic portraiture in which every flaw, blemish, and idiosyncracy of the sitter was delineated. Instead, this piece recalls the earlier Greek Classical tradition, striving for beauty and perfection of an ideal physignomy. Size: 6.125" H (15.6 cm)
