**First Time At Auction**

Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A dark green glass unguentarium (perfume jar)with a classic bell-shaped body, tall slender neck, and out-turned folded rim. Unusually heavy, no substantial deposits within, simply a thick-walled form, boasting an attractive mottled surface and signs of white painted decoration. Size: 1.625" in diameter x 5.25" H (4.1 cm x 13.3 cm)

After the invention of blown glass in the Roman provinces of the Eastern Mediterranean in the first century CE, glass objects became easier to produce, so glass items entered everyday Roman life in the majority of households. Small glass vessels like these would have been used for holding perfume or other unguents.
