Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely carved stone torso of a male togatus figure with a voluminous toga draped across the body from one shoulder. The figure's muscular chest is rendered with well-defined pectorals, abdominals, and a navel, while drapery folds cascade over his left shoulder as well as around his waist and hips. In addition to this impressive form, aspiring to the classical canon put forth by Polykleitos, the stone itself is inherently beautiful with creamy white hues imbued with grey and caramel inclusions. A special example, carved in the round, as opposed to relief, so that one may admire it from every angle! Size: 3.375" W x 6.2" H (8.6 cm x 15.7 cm); 8.375" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA, acquired in 1992; ex-private Mr. Khabbazi collection
