Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 4th century CE. A striking 14K gold ring with a large table presenting a bas relief depiction of a cherub blowing a trumpet - perhaps an early rendering of Gabriel blowing his horn, as the Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in 313 CE, accepting Christianity which became the official religion of the Roman Empire approximately one decade later. Gabriel, the messenger of God and herald of birth foretold of the birth of John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary, but of course he is best known as the angel of the Annunciation who appeared before the Virgin Mary to inform her that she would give birth to Jesus. A ring that brings to mind lyrics to a famous Christmas carol, "Hark the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn king!" US ring size 9.75. Weight: 11.1 grams
