Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A silvered cast bronze medical spoon with an elaborately decorated handle that seems to have a bird head at one end. Our knowledge of ancient Roman surgical instruments comes from excavations of places such as Pompeii's House of the Surgeon, where similar spoons and other medical instruments were found preserved beneath the volcanic ash as well as written descriptions from Hippocrates (5th century BCE) and Galen (2nd century CE). This spoon would have been used for preparing and mixing medicines. Size: 8.125" L (20.6 cm); bronze with 2.5% silver
