Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful cast bronze fibula (brooch) in the form of a hippocamp or possibly dragon being devoured by a massive fish whose mouth is open wide to encompass all but the head and neck of the other animal. Remains of a silvered surface and possibly some green enamel in the fish's scales are still visible on the surface. A pin with small square plate for attachment is at the back. Size: 1.2" W x 0.75" H (3 cm x 1.9 cm); 1.3" H (3.3 cm) on included custom stand.
