Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An impressive silver statuette of Mars (Greek Ares), the Roman god of war, standing contrapposto and nude, save for his prominent, crested helmet. Youthful and beardless, the male deity boasts a slender, athletic body as he holds up his right hand, which would have originally held a spear. His left hand may have once grasped a shield. Size: 0.8" L x 1.4" W x 2.6" H (2 cm x 3.6 cm x 6.6 cm); silver quality: 82.95%; weight: 43.7 grams

Mars (Greek Ares) was the god of war - son to Jupiter and Juno (Greek Zeus and Hera) and one of the Twelve Olympians. His sister Minerva (Greek Athena) was the goddess of war. Whereas Mars/Ares traditionally represents the fiery, violent aspects of combat, his sister Minerva/Athena usually represents intellectual military strategy. Second in importance only to Jupiter, Mars was highly regarded as the chief military god of the Roman army.
