Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine, high-quality silver ring inlaid with a stone intaglio depicting a goat standing left, reaching up to graze on a leafy frond. The intaglio is cut from semi-translucent smoky quartz with a beveled edge. The goat motif on this ring may have held symbolic significance, possibly representing fertility or agricultural connections. Goats were often associated with abundance and fertility, as well as the deities Bacchus and Pan. Size of intaglio: 0.56" L x 0.44" W (1.4 cm x 1.1 cm); band opening: 0.75" Diameter (1.9 cm); US ring size 8.8 / 9; silver quality: 93% to 94.8%; weight: 6.4 grams
