Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A remarkable silver ring boasting a carnelian intaglio of a dancing or leaping satyr. The half-goat, half-man strides right, his head crowned by a wreath as he grasps a pedum or shepherd's crook in one hand and a bunch of grapes in the other. The deep red stone is set in a raised bezel and thick silver band with an angular shoulder that makes for an elegant profile. A wonderful, wearable piece from Ancient Rom! Size of intaglio: 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 1" W (2.5 cm); US ring size: 9; silver quality: 95%; weight: 7.8 grams
