Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful agate intaglio of an eagle set in a silver ring with a flattened shoulder and thick band. The bird is perched with wings tucked on a ground line with its body facing right as its beaked head turns left. The eagle was a prominent animal in ancient Rome known as a symbol of pride and victory in the eyes of the legions. Known as "aquila" in Latin, the eagle was a representation of honor, victory, and cohesiveness within a legion. Please note that the band of this ring is ovoid. Though it measures to a US size 5.75 on the mandrel, its interior measures to 21 millimeters by 16 millimeters.

  • Condition: Some chipping to silver on ring bezel and nicks and abrasions to silver as shown. A few small, light scratches to intaglio; none of which affect imagery. Otherwise, ring and intaglio are intact with a very night presentation. Light patina to silver commensurate with age.
