Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 140 CE. A pretty coin commemorating Faustina, beloved wife of Emperor Antoninus Pius, in a modern gold setting with loop for suspension. The coin is a denarius with the draped bust of Faustina facing right on one side, and Concordia standing on the other, holding a patera and a cornucopia; the pendant is open so that both sides are visible. Faustina and Antoninus were married approximately thirty years, and seem to have had a very happy marriage. She was also a beloved Empress, renowned for her beauty and wisdom, devoted to charity, and inspirational to Roman women for her fashion. Her death devastated the Emperor and he took many steps to honor her memory, including having the Senate deify her and ordering several coins struck, like this one, with her portrait. Size of coin: 0.7" W (1.8 cm); size of pendant: 1.2" L (3 cm)
