Description:

Roman, Republican Period, ca. 80 BCE. A silver (AR) denarius most likely commissioned by Lucius Procilius. Obv: has handsome head of Jupiter with wreath in hair. Rev: inscribed PROCILI with a standing Goddess Juno Sospita with shield and spear in front of a serpent. Size: .625" W (1.6 cm); 4 grams

The denarius was the most common Republican Roman silver coin, and they often depict gods and goddesses. Juno, the goddess of women and childbirth, had her cult centered at Lanuvium, which is most likely where the moneyer was from - the person who commissioned this coin was probably Lucius Procilius, a senator, but may also be the historian of the same name.
