Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A miniature but solid cast silver statuette of a male athlete, nude save the cloak draped over his shoulder, standing in contrapposto with his weight shifted to the right leg and his left leg slightly bent, holding a patera in his right hand. A wonderful piece that demonstrates the Classical penchant for naturalistic sculpture and the human form - even on a miniature scale! What's more, this piece is made of solid silver making it quite rare! Size: 1.5" H (3.8 cm); 2.625" H (6.7 cm) on included custom stand; weight: 19.6 grams

The figure's anatomy is captured quite adeptly with balanced proportions, fine musculature, and implied motion. Such calculated poses intended to conjure human vitality and in sculpture were inspired by the works of Polykleitos which became the model to which artists aspired in Graeco-Roman as well as later Western European art.
