Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 6th century CE. An interestingly-shaped small transport amphora, without handles, of a local design rather than from a large mass manufacturer. It has a flat bottom, a slightly tapered body, and a rounded top with a tiny spout without a rim. This suggests that its contents were evaporative and needed to be protected - perhaps wine or some other alcohol? Size: 4.2" W x 13.1" H (10.7 cm x 33.3 cm)

This amphora sank in a shipwreck, a common occurrence in the stormy Mediterranean, and lay underwater for centuries while sea life covered it; remains of shells and a sponge encrust its surface. This same sea life would have eaten away its cork and spilled its contents onto the sea floor, leaving the hard pottery behind for us to find.
