Description:

Roman, Holy Land, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A set of 2 ancient Roman redware vessels including a larger strainer amphora and a petite unguentarium. The unguentarium was intended to hold scented oils, perfumes, or other cosmetic materials. The design of the strainer vessel - with several perforations within the neck - suggests that thicker liquid was poured into the neck before the larger flavoring components could be removed prior to serving. Size (amphora): 6.84" W x 10.3" H (17.4 cm x 26.2 cm); (unguentarium): 1.25" W x 2.8" H (3.2 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: private Manchester, Vermont, USA collection; ex-private estate collection, Bennington, Vermont, USA, acquired in the 1960s
