Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wonderful example of a redware plate, mold-made from ceramic and designed to be used at the table. The plate is striking in its simplicity, with a deep bowl and steep, shallow walls forming a slightly incurved rim. It sits on a flat base with a thick ring. In tondo is a stamped decoration of repeated leaf shapes inside a dotted circle. The stamped leaf was a common redware decoration. Roman redware items were made in vast factories, especially in the western part of the Empire, and shipped out far and wide - a plate like this could have graced an officer's table at Hadrian's Wall. Indeed, many fragments of pottery with a leaf stamp have been found at the Roman fort of Vindolanda in northern Britain. Size: 10.75" W x 1.7" H (27.3 cm x 4.3 cm)
