Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, probably manufactured in North Africa, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A redware bowl with a pronounced, slightly flared foot and a deep body with concave sides and a slightly flared rim. A wide, convex lid with a small round handle in its center completes the dish. This is an example of simple Samian Ware (sometimes known as terra sigillata) or possibly an early Fine Ware (fineware). These types of pottery were mass produced in Roman provinces and exported throughout the western part of the Empire. They were made to be used for displaying and serving foods. Some were decorated, but many, like this one, were simple shapes with glossy finish. Many of them are known from Roman Britain; they are also known from the Pompeii "hoard", a collection of the vessels found in a crate that had arrived in the town and not yet been taken out of their packaging when Mt. Vesuvius erupted. Size with lid on: 6.5" W x 3.1" H (16.5 cm x 7.9 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex Sammlung T.Z., Munich, Germany, collected before 1992
