Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful redware platter with a symmetrical form and a square stamped low relief motif of a griffin in the center. The platter has a shallow ovoid impression at its center, and is bordered by a raised handle area with flattened ends that have some kind of mask-like or possibly floral low relief motifs on their faces. This item was made to be used at the table by an ordinary Roman household, and would have been ideal for laying out appetizers (the course called "gustum") like cold meat or small fish around the rim. Size: 7.25" L x 12.6" W x 1.05" H (18.4 cm x 32 cm x 2.7 cm)
