Description:

**Originally Listed At $250**

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A red mold-made slipware terracotta vessel with a flat circular base with an incised ring around its edge and a planta pedis (maker's mark) in the shape of a serpent head, sloping side walls, ovolo-variant shoulders with a repeating curvilinear pattern, a thin ring handle with a wide pierced hole and two parallel incised lines, a small protruding wick spout, a miniscule fill hole, and a small incision between the two holes. The recessed tondo features a leaping stag which is symbolic of Artemis, the Roman goddess of the hunt. Lamps like this were used to pray for the guidance and good fortune of hunters and trappers throughout ancient Rome, and would have been a normal part of a hunter's travel gear. Size: 3.625" L x 2.7" W x 1.5" H (9.2 cm x 6.9 cm x 3.8 cm).
