Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A lovely mold-made redware oil lamp with a circular base, gradually-expanding walls, a rounded shoulder, a pierced tab-shaped handle, a small fill hole, and a heart-shaped wick spout. The shoulder is decorated with a register of abstract phytomorphic and zoomorphic motifs in low relief, and a set of concentric circles separates the shoulder from the recessed tondo. Within the tondo is a wondrous depiction of Neptune (Greek Poseidon), the god of the sea. The mythical deity has a serpentine lower body with a wide tail fin and raises his upper body while blowing into a conch shell horn. Size: 3.375" W x 2" H (8.6 cm x 5.1 cm).
