Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century BCE. A redware bowl with a pronounced, slightly flared foot and a deep body with concave sides and a slightly flared rim. This is an example of simple Samian Ware (sometimes known as terra sigillata) or possibly an early Fine Ware (fineware). These types of pottery were mass produced in Roman provinces and exported throughout the western part of the Empire. They were made to be used for displaying and serving foods. Some were decorated, but many, like this one, were simple shapes with glossy finish. Many of them are known from Roman Britain; they are also known from the Pompeii "hoard", a collection of the vessels found in a crate that had arrived in the town and not yet been taken out of their packaging when Mt Vesuvius erupted on August 23, 79 CE. Size: 7.4" W x 4.5" H (18.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
