Description:

Roman Empire, north Africa, Ca 3rd to 4th century CE. Lovely redware bowl North Africa, Carthage, Roman Empire, 3rd to 4th century CE. During the 2nd through 5th centuries North Africa became the production center for most of the Roman pottery used throughout the massive empire. Examples like this have been found in virtually every corner of the empire from Britain to Turkey and just about every location in between. Deep redware bowl looking similar to what one might find in any kitchen today. Flat rim decorated with 5 applied pottery bears, most likely in reference to the Romans' love of watching battles between man and beast in the various coliseums that existed throughout the empire. Nice large example measuring 9" D x 2-3/8" H.
