Description:

Rome, ca. 1st / 2nd Century CE. Inscribed terracotta lamp with the image of a bestiarius in gladiatorial combat with a rearing bear. The bestiarius exposed himself to the perilous fight with beasts. In our case he is armed with a crested helmet, a shield, a piece of armor or armlet on the sword leading arm and probably greaves. The bottom of the lamp is inscribed in Greek letters with TROILOY. This is the name of the owner in genitive case and means: [I (the lamp) am in the possession] of Troilos. The central disk is surrounded by a band of ovules. Length 9.3 cm (3.7").

Provenance: Ex-private German collection J. und M. T., Bonn (1950-1960) - Swiss private collection since 2010; thence Swiss art market.
