Description:

Roman Empire, Provincial, Spain, 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fine carved marble depicting a Herm - in this case it represents Hermes or Dionysus. Long curly beard and mustache with voluted locks, slightly open mouth, diadem upon his head with curly locks of hairs flowing over it to each side. Base and reverse left reserved. Hermes were usually household deities protecting the household or doorways. They were placed atop a rectangular plinth. Size: 3.625" W x 5.875" H (9.2 cm x 14.9 cm)

There is an inscription upon the reverse of this Herm. It says "CORTIJO DE BORNOZ, 1916." This appears to reference a site in Bornos, Spain.
