Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gathering of 5 mold-formed pottery oil lamps, each with a pierced handle and a wide wick spout. Three of the beige-hued lamps are of relatively similar design, while the fourth beige lamp features a raised rooster striding to the left within the recessed tondo. The orange-hued lamp features a tondo surrounded by slender raised rings, and within is the outline of a pastiche where a dolphin tondo from another lamp was adhered. Size of largest (rooster tondo): 4.28" L x 3.18" W x 2.11" H (10.9 cm x 8.1 cm x 5.4 cm)

Provenance: private Bell Buckle, Tennessee, USA collection, by descent, acquired in Tunisia before 1969

  • Condition: Dolphin tondo is from another oil lamp and was attached within redware lamp in modern times. Each lamp with light earthen deposits, minor abrasions and nicks, and softening to finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to overall forms.
