Description:

Roman, imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A mold-formed pottery oil lamp with a circular base and a faded planta pedis, gradually-expanding walls, a rounded shoulder, a pierced tab handle, a recessed tondo with a small fill hole, and an ovoid wick spout, all covered in pale-orange slip. Within the tondo is a wondrous scene of a male warrior - holding a short sword in one hand and a round shield in the other - with his genitalia folded backwards between his legs towards the head of a long-beaked bird with large talons and a feathered body. Base with maker's mark, but mostly obscured from age and wear. An intriguing example of Roman artistry replete with fantastical imagery and skillful construction. Size: 3" W x 1.625" H (7.6 cm x 4.1 cm).
