Description:

Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A lovely mold-formed pottery oil lamp with an incised circular base, gradually-expanding walls, a smooth shoulder decorated with a repeating ovolo motif, a recessed tondo with a central fill hole and a small vent hole, and an ovoid wick spout. Within the tondo is a charming relief scene of four running hounds enclosed within slender ridges, each chasing the tail of the one in front. Traces of original dark-brown slip are visible across the composition and make this an attractive example of utilitarian Roman artistry! Size: 3.1" W x 1.25" H (7.9 cm x 3.2 cm).
