Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A mold-made terracotta oil lamp featuring a low relief rooster adorning a recessed tondo surrounded by several concentric incised rings, a small fill hole, and a large wick spout decorated with curvilinear motifs. Interestingly, the Roman deity Priapus was sometimes represented as a cock, with its beak as a phallus and its wattles as testicles. In Roman times, the cock or a man with rooster attributes represented an erotic symbol, Priapus Gallinaceus. Size: 3.875" L x .875" H (9.8 cm x 2.2 cm)

Provenance: private Schroeder collection, Boca Raton, Florida, USA, acquired before 1970
