Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A lovely mold-formed pottery oil lamp with a recessed circular base, rounded walls, ovalo-variant shoulders, a pierced lug handle, a recessed tondo with a small fill hole and vent hole, and a heart-shaped wick spout. Within the tondo is a low-relief depiction of Neptune (Greek Poseidon), the god of the seas. The deity faces left with his left arm extended while holding his signature trident in his right hand. He is presented in a charging pose while striding atop four hippocamps, each with a horse-form body and head as well as a fish-form lower body with wide tails. Beneath the base is a planta pedis (maker's mark) depicting a trio of wheat sheaves. An excellent example with very fine details! Size: 3.5" W x 1.8" H (8.9 cm x 4.6 cm).
