Description:

Roman, Imperial period, North Africa, 150 to 200 CE. A fine example of a rare type of oil lamp, inscribed on the base: IVN ALE (Caius Junius Alexis). The design on the discus is "victory palms". These were given to successful competitors in athletic contests throughout the Greek and Roman world. They are a very common symbol of the Roman Imperial period. Perhaps the owner of this lamp was an athlete or wanted to celebrate a particularly satisfying victory. Size: 4.05" L x 2.8" W x 1.7" H (10.3 cm x 7.1 cm x 4.3 cm)
