Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A mold-formed pottery oil lamp of a circular form with an erotic scene between a man and a woman within the recessed tondo. The man lays on his back while a woman straddles him and faces towards his feet. The flat-bottomed lamp features rounded walls, an ovolo patterned shoulder, and a petite wick spout protruding from the front. Traces of red pigment are still visible atop the orange-hued pottery. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 3.2" L x 2.8" W (8.1 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Hindman Auctions, ex-George R. Francoeur Trust, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, sold to benefit the George R. Francoeur Scholarship Fund at Cranbrook Academy of Art  before 2000

  • Condition: Repaired from two large pieces across the middle, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Resurfacing in some areas of shoulder and lower body and softening to erotic details within tondo. Nice remains of original pigment throughout.
