Description:

Roman, Imperial, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming mold-formed pottery oil lamp presenting with an annular, bullseye-style base, a bulbous body, a slightly sloped shoulder, a wick spout, and a recessed central tondo containing two petite fill holes. Embellished with decorative patterns of vertical rectangles, the central tondo shows Diana (Greek Artemis), left, facing, Apollo, right. Diana - goddess of the hunt, the countryside and the Moon - is shown wearing a toga and a crescent moon diadem atop her braided crown of hair, while her brother Apollo - god of the arts, truth, and the Sun - has a sunburst surrounding his head and is wearing a tunic and a modius. A small looped handle rises from the back of the vessel. Lucite stand in photograph is not included. Size: 4.5" L x 3.25" W (11.4 cm x 8.3 cm)
