Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca 1st to 2nd Century CE. A petite and intriguing terracotta oil lamp, embellished with a chocolate glaze, depicting a bas-relief bull striding left in profile on the recessed tondo just above the fill hole. The depiction of the bull is not surprising given the featured role of the bull in Roman religion e.g. the Mithraic mystery cult. Incised concentric circles followed by a repeating egg and dart motif frames the tondo, and the vessel presents a heart shaped wick spout and a flat circular base with an impressed planta pedia that appears to represent a stylized seed. Size: 3" L x 2.5" W x 1" H (7.6 cm x 6.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
