Description:

Roman, Imperial period, North African colonies, Tunisia, ca. 120 to 180 CE. A delightful grayware oil lamp decorated with the relief tondo of a bare-breasted female as drapery covers one shoulder. A wicked spout protrudes from one side and a loop handle from the other. The underside of the base is stamped with the maker's mark "MNOVIVSI" for the workshop of Marcus Novius Justus, which was producing pottery in North Africa from about 120 to 180 CE. Size: 4.3" L x 2.9" W x 1.7" H (10.9 cm x 7.4 cm x 4.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Austin, Texas, USA collection, acquired May 2021 via Helios Gallery Antiquities, Wiltshire, United Kingdom; ex-collection of Marius-Victor-Ernest Dumas, North Africa and France, acquired in Tunisia between ca. 1890 to 1920
