Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A large, mold-formed ceramic oil lamp with an intricate circular base, rounded walls, broad shoulders, a pierced tab handle, a recessed tondo with a small fill hole, and a heart-shaped wick spout. The base is decorated with three pairs of concentric circles separated with an impressed V-shape - perhaps a planta pedis (maker's mark) - and the shoulder boasts a repeating, low-relief register of acanthus leaves and grape clusters. Within the recessed tondo is a depiction of Athena standing in profile with a chiton draped across her body; she wears her characteristic helmet and holds a spear while one hand reaches towards some fruit resting on a pedestal. Size: 3.625" W x 2" H (9.2 cm x 5.1 cm).

The cult of Athena continued in Rome, especially during its earlier periods; the fable of Arachne, for example, who enters an ill-fated weaving contest with the goddess that ends with her turned into a spider, is a late Roman addition to the pantheon of Classical mythology.
