Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A very fine example of a Roman mold-made pottery oil lamp, stamped on its flat base with a maker's mark and decorated with a horned bust in the discus. The lamp style is a rounded body with a short rounded spou, the shoulder plain with rounded bands demarcating the discus. At the reat is a ring handle. Red slip colors the body. On the base is a maker's mark, a stamp reading "LMVNPHILE", which according to the British Museum catalogue of Greek and Roman Lamps corresponds to the maker L. Miniiati. Overall a wonderful example of one of the most ubiquitious and important artifacts from the ancient world. Size: 4.3" L x 3.1" W x 1.75" H (10.9 cm x 7.9 cm x 4.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
