Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A set of 2 Roman artifacts - a pottery female figure and a glass unguentarium. The free-blown unguentarium has a teardrop body with a rough pontil scar, a lengthy neck, and a flared, in-folded rim, all presented in translucent yellow-green hues. The mold-formed pottery female figure presents nude with globular breasts, an exposed pudendum, voluptuous hips, and a feminine neckline. This figure perhaps represents Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the goddess of love and beauty. Size (female figure): 2.3" W x 5.75" H (5.8 cm x 14.6 cm); 8.625" H (21.9 cm) on included custom stand; (unguentarium): 0.8" W x 4.375" H (2 cm x 11.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

  • Condition: Pottery figure repaired along proper right side with losses to lower legs, arms, and head as shown. Abrasions and light encrustations, with chips and small spalls in scattered areas. Old inventory labels beneath display stand. Figure drilled through bottom of legs for mounting and display purposes. Unguentarium has encrustations, weathering film, and micro-bubbling within glass matrix, otherwise intact and very good with nice iridescence. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
