Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-formed pottery head depicting a male grotesque with exaggerated features such as a bulbous nose, protruding lips and chin, gaunt cheeks and eyes, puffy eye brows, and cupped ears, all beneath a conical cap with a shallow brim. The designation as a "grotesque" does not denote a revolting or otherwise off-putting presentation but rather one of veristic accuracy. Though some artists used the maladies and deformations of others to create exaggerated caricatures, others used such negatively-perceived aspects of certain individuals as a means of expressing them in a true-to-life approach. Size: 2.5" W x 3.5" H (6.4 cm x 8.9 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
