Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A fine, single handled vessel comprised of translucent, aqua-colored glass. The mold-made apple-shaped body presents nine evenly-spaced ribs that radiate from the base, a short and slightly flared neck rising to a folded rim, and a trailed handle that joins rim to shoulder. All rests upon a concave bottom with extant traces of glass that adhered around it during the molding process. The exterior presents a smooth polished finish and mesmerizing ice blue hues. A wonderful example with traces of rainbow iridescence as well! Size: 3" W handle to opposite wall x 2.75" H (7.6 cm x 7 cm)

This style of glass is known as pillar-molded, referring to the production technique, whereby the shape of the vessel was determined by taking a flat sheet of pliable glass and placing it into a solid mold upside down; this glass was then worked so that it is slipped/sagged over the mold to create the ribs visible on the exterior.
