Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A mold-formed terracotta oil lamp with a circular base and a planta pedis (maker's mark), gradually-expanding walls, a recessed tondo with a small fill hole, and a projecting wick spout with pointed lateral spikes. Within the tondo is a low relief image of the goddess Aphrodite standing in a flowing himation and playing a stringed lyre. Covered in bright red slip, this is a wonderful example of Roman pottery artistry! Size: 2.7" W x 0.9" H (6.9 cm x 2.3 cm).
