Description:

Rome, ca. 1st century CE. Terracotta oil lamp, the central sunken discus depicting a dramatic scene in which the goddess Nike Victoria is engaged in a ritual sacrifice of a bull. Violent efforts were necessary to defeat evil according to Roman mythology. With this sacrifice came the sublime values of pietas and Victoria. Concentric banding surrounds the roundel, a downward sloping shoulder adorned with 8 symbols including a bull's head (Taurus), looped handle, rounded spout, signs of remaining red pigment on surface. A nice example! Size: 4-3/4" from end of spout to end of handle x 1-1/2"H. Provenance: Ex-Senatus Consulto, Denmark. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #102772
